Our Fortnight Ahead
Welcome to the next two weeks of learning. Here is a look at what we will be covering in the Year 4 classroom.

Religious Education

We are learning about Mary, the first disciple, as a role model, so that we can further connect to our Christian values. We will analyse artworks that honour Mary and how effectively these communicate her wisdom.
How you can help at home: Ask your child about the artwork they created.

English

We are learning to notice when a sentence or idea doesn’t make sense, so that we can use strategies like rereading or context clues to understand it better.
How you can help at home: Check the meaning of sentences with your child, using strategies such as rereading, using context clues, and breaking down difficult words.

Mathematics

We develop the big idea that what needs to be measured determines the unit of measurement. In this 2-week unit, students are provided opportunities to:

• use a scaled instrument to relate 1000 grams to one kilogram
• interpret commonly used fractions of a kilogram, including 1/2, 1/4, 3/4, and relate these to the number of grams
• select and use appropriate units to estimate, measure and compare lengths and distances and convert between units of measure.

How you can help at home: Pantry Hunt: Give them a goal: "Find three items in the pantry that add up to 1 kg," or "Find something that weighs about 1/4kg (250 g)." Have them check the package labels to verify their guesses.

Pastoral Care:

This coming fortnight our life raft focus is: Have Reasons for the Things You Say and Do.
We will use the Grow Your Mind schools program (GYM) to learn how to manage conflict well and be better friends to each other. A great opportunity to practise this life raft.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Bike Education - Friday 18th September
Group 1 for our Bike Education excursion at Ashmore PCYC will be on Friday 18th September.
This program teaches young children the necessary skills to travel safely and confidently within their local community through a blend of bike handling techniques and interactive simulations. The interactive nature of the program is designed to make learning about road safety an engaging experience, which fosters a positive attitude towards responsible bike safety. 

World of Maths - Wed 23rd September
As part of this Term’s work, we have invited World of Maths (a travelling, interactive
Maths Workshop) to visit our school. World of Maths offers an opportunity for students to see how maths is applied to everyday life situations and explore Maths in a hands-on environment. Students are encouraged to communicate their Maths ideas and answers with other students in small teams, working together. Students will gain insight into problem solving, working in teams, and explore various mathematical strands which are part of their curriculum this term. It is a highly engaging session which will show that Maths is everywhere and is important and of course that Maths can be fun!
Parents are able to attend at no cost.

ST JAMES GLEE CLUB: NEW HARMONICS Thursday 24th September (see attached flyer)

Costumes: Year 4 to dress in vibrant, "love-themed" attire.

Local Community Police Project. We have been gifted two surfboards to decorate as part of a local community art exhibition. If you are able to help with donations of shells, please deliver these to the school office.
