Kindergarten Reading Workshop

We sincerely thank all of the parents who were able to attend our Kindergarten Reading Workshop on Thursday the 30th of April. We were grateful to see so many of you in attendance to find out how we teach reading and writing in the classroom and what you can do at home to support your child’s learning. If you were unable to attend our workshop, please find our workshop slides in the parent resources section of the blog. As always, if you have any questions, please come and see us.

Mother’s Day

We wish all the beautiful mums, grandmas and special women in our lives a joyful and relaxing Mother’s Day next weekend. You are so loved and appreciated!

Save the Date! St James will meet to ‘Walk Safely to School’ on Friday, 22nd May—more information to come.

InitiaLit

During the next two weeks, children will learn the following sounds and meet the characters:

Rosie Rabbit - ‘r’
Ollie Otter - ‘o’
Cody Camel - ‘c’

Once we have taught the sound ‘r’, we will then send decodable readers home if your child is ready.

In addition to completing the homework that is sent home in your child’s homework folder, you could:

  • create flash cards for each sound (‘m’, ‘s’, ‘t’, ‘a’, ‘p’, ‘i’, ‘f’ and ‘r’).
  • say a sound for your child to write, using correct letter formation.
  • brainstorm words that begin with a given sound.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, children are continuing to identify the smaller parts within a given number so that they can represent a number in lots of different ways.

To support this learning at home, you could play the following game:

The Hiding Game

This game uses physical objects to help children visualise how a total amount (the "whole") can be split into two "parts."

What you need:

  • Number cards (2-10) You could also use playing cards.
  • Counters. You could also use lego bricks, coins etc.
  • A small bowl or cup (To hide the "mystery part”).

How to play:

  1. Select a number card and ask your child to collect that many counters. Explain that this is the “whole”.
  2. Ask your child to close their eyes. Hide some of the counters under the bowl and leave the rest out in the open.
  3. Ask your child to look at the "part" that is visible and figure out what "part" is hidden. For example: "There are 10 pieces total. I can see 6 on the table. How many are hiding under the bowl?"
  4. Lift the bowl to check the answer.

Kindergarten will be presenting at the school assembly on Friday, 15th May. We are asking all children to please bring a white T-shirt (or a science coat, if you have one at home) to wear for the presentation. This could be Mum or Dad's white shirt so it looks like a lab coat. We hope to see you there!
