Read, Read, Read!

Super Spelling and Fluent Readers! 📚
We have had another incredibly focused and productive week of literacy in Year 1!

Our Phonics Focus: ‘ar’, ‘or’, and ‘ore’ This week, the students have been busy learning new digraphs (two letters that make one sound) and a trigraph (three letters that make one sound!). We have been focusing on:

'ar' (like in barn and star)
'or' (like in fork and short)
'ore' (like in more and shore)
The children did a fantastic job learning how to spot these sounds in words to help them read, as well as using them to spell accurately during our writing time.

🚀 Building Our Reading Fluency
Alongside our spelling, we have had a big focus on fluency this week. To help the children become faster, smoother, and more confident readers, we have been working hard on:

Speedy sounding out: Getting faster at blending sounds together.
Tricky words: Instantly recognising those words that can't easily be sounded out.
Reading and re-reading: We have been practicing reading a text, and then reading it again. Re-reading is a magic trick for reading success—it helps children move from decoding words to truly understanding and enjoying the story!
How to help at home: When your child brings home their reader, encourage them to read it to you more than once. Watch how much faster and more confident they get on the second and third try!
