All Things Decimals!

First and Foremost, Happy Mother's day to all of the fantastic mothers who care for and raise all of our beautiful St James students.

Over the past two weeks, we explored the idea that our number system goes on forever — both to incredibly large numbers and to very small ones.
Students had the chance to work with big numbers up to and beyond one million, and to explore decimals to three decimal places. They used number lines, place value charts, and other tools to rename, represent and order numbers in different ways. They also applied their place value knowledge to solve addition and subtraction problems with accuracy and confidence.

Throughout this unit, students developed a deeper understanding of how our number system works. They became more fluent in using numbers and learnt how to clearly explain their thinking when solving problems. They practised comparing and ordering decimals, worked with large numbers, and used the role of zero to help them understand number properties. They also chose and applied strategies for solving real-life problems involving addition and subtraction.

By the end of this unit, students strengthened their number sense and were able to confidently work with a wide range of numbers — from very large to very small — using smart strategies and clear reasoning.
